The Fascinating Porron: A Unique Spanish Vessel for Wine Lovers
September 7, 2023
The Porron, with its distinctive shape and purpose, is a vessel that can hold approximately one bottle of wine (750 milliliters). It resembles a bottle with a bulging body, a long handle, and an elongated spout. It allows a large group of people to enjoy wine without ever touching their lips to the vessel.
While the origins of this truly intriguing invention may trace back to ancient Roman horn-shaped vessels, researchers still debate its precise heritage. It’s worth noting that the Porron is mentioned in Alexandre Dumas’ book “From Paris to Cadiz” and in George Orwell’s notes, where he found the item rather off-putting.
Regardless of its history, the Porron can be found in many establishments and traditional gatherings throughout Catalonia, Valencia, and Spain as a whole. Trying a sip from it is a must. However, newcomers should be aware that mishaps can occur, with spilled contents often leading to stained clothing—especially unfortunate if the wine happens to be red.
