Voyage of Vino: Safeguarding Bottles for the Journey Home
September 7, 2023
Embarking on a wine-tasting expedition, meandering through picturesque vineyards, delving into the annals of beloved wine production — this vinous journey is a fantastical experience that invariably leaves us yearning to carry home a bottle or two of the splendid libations we’ve had the pleasure of sampling. Yet, this desire raises a significant question: How does one pack a bottle of wine securely in luggage, ensuring it reaches its destination unscathed?
One of the most common methods for safely transporting a wine bottle in a suitcase involves placing it in the center, enveloped by dense fabric like a sweater, and further securing it within a few layers of plastic bags. While this approach carries some risk, if chosen, it’s advisable to follow these steps: double-bag the bottle, wrap it with a dark sweater or pullover, and encase it in at least one more bag. When traveling with two bottles, each should be individually packed. It’s essential that the suitcase is rigid on the exterior and densely packed inside to prevent any shifting of the bottles.
The world keeps evolving, and the practice of toting bottles has long caught the attention of travel accessory manufacturers. Often, specialty packaging designed to safeguard bottles during travel can be found in wine shops – it’s crucial to inquire about such options immediately.
Moreover, you can pre-purchase a dedicated bottle container. While there are special wine suitcases available, they tend to be bulky and not as user-friendly. They’re better suited for those who are frequently traveling with bottles. Then there are resilient and lightweight plastic cases, available online or in specialized stores, that inflate from the inside, cocooning the bottle in protection.
Before embarking on your wine adventure and purchasing bottles to bring back home, it’s important to verify whether there are any restrictions at the airport or imposed by the airline. Firstly, there might be limitations on the amount of alcohol you can import, dictated by customs (this also applies to layovers). Secondly, bottles need to be checked into the luggage, so ensure that your baggage is compliant. For carry-on luggage, quantities exceeding 100 milliliters are prohibited, which often leaves you with the selection at the airport’s Duty-Free shops.
Frequently, prominent wineries offer home delivery services. If available and if wines can be shipped to your country, it’s simpler to arrange direct delivery and avoid the head-scratching over how many layers of clothing and bags are necessary to safeguard that treasured bottle.
In the realm of wine exploration, the journey continues even after the vineyards.
